New York Central Main line Evolution

New York Central / Penn Central / Conrail

Berea, OH to Bellefontaine, OH Main Line

Submitted by Geoff Hubbs, Brooklyn, NY

On this page, we will follow the New York Central double track main line from Berea, just outside of Cleveland, to Bellefontaine and Columbus, Ohio. The lines split at Galion. The September 27, 1953 Ohio Division TT No. 41 lists the stations showing the distance from Clevelend and the many passenger trains by name and number with the conditional station stops at the bottom. This page is the first of two listing the schedules of the westbound fleet

More details are shown on the Stations, Office Calls, Signals and Telephones page. So much detail is given that this one page just covers the 42.4 miles from Berea to Greenwich.

Also of interest, the Division's Through Freight Train schedules are shown. This was for information only and did not confer time table authority.

The NYC moved from 8x11 inch timetables to pocket size ones in the 1960s. This Southern Region/Ohio Central Division April 30, 1967 TT No. 21 example includes interlockings, block stations, junctions/crossings and sidings. The listing of every signal and telephone location has been eliminated. It looks similar to the next Penn Central example, which suggests some merger preparation had taken place.

This Penn Central Southern Region/Columbus Division April 27, 1969 TT No.3 adopts the PRR format listing interlockings, block stations, other railroad crossings and sidings.

And then Conrail…Southern Region April 27, 1980 TT No. 1 which is similar to the Penn Central format except all the HBD/DEDs (hot box detectors and dragging equipment detectors) and + signs make it very busy.
